University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)  is New Jersey's state university of health sciences and the nation's largest institution of its kind.  The Department of Anesthesiology at the UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School currently consists of 20 board-certified anesthesiologists.

UMDNJ recruited a new Department Chair to enhance existing anesthesiology services.  Working together with the new Chair, IHC developed and implemented a plan to improve the financial and operational health of the department.  The goals of the assignment included assisting with strategy development, performing an operational assessment, developing a business plan, and carrying out an implementation plan based upon the assessment findings.

IHC assessed the current operational and financial status of the department, including management, staffing, clinical services, compensation strategies, billing and collection services.  Opportunities to improve services and profitability were quantified and prioritized.

Based upon the assessment findings, IHC implemented the approved recommendations while internally managing the department.  This process included revising the physician compensation methodology, reorganizing the department from a staffing perspective, improving billing and collections, and recruiting a permanent administrator.
