Bon Secours & Canterbury Partnership for Care |
|
Bon Secours & Canterbury Partnership for Care (BSCPC) is a New Jersey
health system consisting of St. Mary Hospital in Hoboken, St. Francis
and Christ Hospitals in Jersey City, and the Franciscan Home and
Rehabilitation Center in Jersey City. IHC was retained by BSCPC
to provide the following physician-related services. |
|
|
|
Emergency Room Privatization IHC's
initial assignment was a financial feasibility study of the impact of
privatization of the physician component of Emergency Room services at
St. Mary and St. Francis hospitals, with a combined annual volume of 40,000 visits. This
study involved a review of volume, payer mix, physician
staffing levels and salaries, malpractice expenses, physician coding
and productivity, registration procedures and other relevant operating
costs. Additionally, a break-even report with a sensitivity analysis
and a multi-year forecast was developed. Based on these
analyses, BSCPC made the decision to privatize emergency room
services. |

|
Creation of Central Billing Office (CBO)
IHC was later retained to develop and implement a central billing office for
all physicians employed by the health system. The purpose of
this assignment was to ensure that all services performed by salaried
physicians were captured and billed. The project consisted of a
comprehensive physician analysis and credentialing, the development
of a charge system, and the implementation of the CBO. |
| |
|
| |
Physician Analysis and Credentialing |
| |
IHC first
audited the patient care services provided by the hospitals'
employed physicians. Based upon this analysis, all potential
billable services were identified and billed appropriately.
Our physician analysis also identified a substantial number of
employed physicians who were not fully credentialed with third
party payers. IHC consultants gathered the data necessary to
complete the credentialing applications and obtained third party
payer approvals. |
| |
|
| |
Development of a Charge System |
| |
In order to ensure the optimal maximization of physician billing,
IHC reviewed current insurance fee schedules and updated encounter
forms, benchmarked physician productivity and billing office
performance standards, and streamlined the billing process. |
| |
|
|
Interim CBO Management
As a result of the project’s success, BSCPC subsequently engaged
IHC to provide
interim management and support services to the physician central
billing office. During this engagement, IHC increased
collections by $1.5 million, or 40%. At the end of the
assignment, IHC assisted with the search for a permanent billing
company to manage the CBO. |
